In an era where great talents of South African football are quickly siphoned out to Europe at tender ages, depriving the league the chance to witness they talents. It has been a blessing in disguise that Rele Mofokeng has not followed the great track upwards to Europe or recently the Middle East as his colleague Nkota did by going to Saudi Arabia.
AFCON Lukewarm Performance
Rele was thrown in the deep end against African giants Egypt and Cameroon however, he struggled to impose himself in the matches. This did not take away his confidence; it actually provided the fire in his belly come the 2nd half of the Betway Premiership. He has been firing on all cylinders, reaching double figures for the season for the first time since making his debut for Orlando Pirates.
Is Mofokeng Miles Ahead of Themba Zwane
In a country gripped by nostalgia, where conversations about yesteryear heroes compared to current players always divide opinion. Try starting bar talk of comparison of Themba Zwane and the likes of Shoes Moshoeu, Dr Khumalo. You won’t hear the end of it. No one wants to entertain that. Old school is always better. We don’t believe that we are actually witnessing greatness. Now, the conversation is whether Rele Mofokeng is better than Themba Zwane. Considering how Themba Zwane at the same age was not good enough for Mamelodi Sundowns and had to be loaned out to Mpumalanga Black Aces to get some game time. Sometimes we forget that Rele Mofokeng is only 21; he still has a lot of football ahead of him, to have his name in the same conversation with living legends like Themba Zwane is testimony of the greatness we are witnessing. With the World Cup coming up in June, it’s interesting to see how Hugo Broos will select his squad and who he will pick for the number 10 role.
